Learning Needs of mastectomy patients

Abstract
The purpose of this study is to provide the basic data for effective educational program for mastectomy patients that increase the quality of life with the help for physical recovery and emotional adaptation. The subjects who had mastectomies between March and June, 2003 in St. Mary¡¯s Kangnam hospital and had undergone Stage 1 or 2 were total 63, and their average age was 49 and average post-surgical period was 14.5 months. Learning needs was measured with Kim¡¯s (1999) learning needs scale of breast cancer patients. The results were as follows 1. Learning needs was 4.06 out of 5 points. The item of ¡¯healthy eating¡¯ was the highest, while ¡¯operate time of breast reconstruction¡¯ was the lowest, in case of learning need. 2. The subscales of learning needs was shown as follows : complications md follow-up care. characteristic of disease, knowledge on treatment. chemotherapy. radiation and hormonal therapy, community and family support, breast prosthesis and reconstruction, and sexual life. 3. The highest learning needs was ¡¯types and wearing method of breast prosthesis¡¯ in the item of breast prosthesis and reconstruction, ¡¯attention needed for hormonal therapy¡¯ in radiation and hormonal therapy, ¡¯common site of metastasis¡¯ in characteristic of disease, ¡¯heathy eating¡¯ in complications and follow-up care, ¡¯medical educational program for mastectomy patients in organizations¡¯ in community and family support, ¡¯side-effects and their management of chemotherapy¡¯ in chemotherapy, ¡¯total periods of treatment for breast cancer¡¯ in knowledge on treatment, ¡¯attention needed for sexual life¡¯ in sexual life. As the result above, effective educational program is required for mastectomy patient for early breast cancer.
